It’s pretty easy to miss some internet sensations, but Mac Miller is definitely one to look out for. ‘Best Day Ever’ is the fourth mixtape to come from the 19 year old, tied together by lyrics about hoes, weed and trainers and upbeat tunes to bop your snapback’d head to. Though some songs such as ‘Donald Trump’ and ‘Wake Up’ offer a more structured mainstream hip hop/pop song vibe, Mac hasn’t deviated from his trippy spaced out style, which he featured on his third mixtape ‘K.I.D.S’, with songs such as ‘Down The Rabbit Hole’. Though Mac might not be at the top of his game lyrically, his infectious style draws us in anyway. Fellow Pittsburgh descendant Wiz Khalifa also appears on the album, in ‘Keep Floatin’, typically about passing the joint and getting steadily higher.
While Mac Miller has definitely secured himself a place in the hearts and ears of many younger hip hop fans with his musings of typical teenage life, he may not have yet talked round the older fan. This does not mean to say though that he hasn’t created a small dent on the face of the current hip hop scene.
